The Calling of Medicine

Before it was a vocation, it was a vow —
not the ledger's cold demand,

The Patient

It is not the disease that walks through the door —
it is a life, a history, a name
that once was someone's first whispered prayer.
Listen with more than the stethoscope;
listen where certainty ends and probability begins,
where medicine kneels before the singular human heart.

The Art of Medicine

You are the bridge between evidence and mystery,
between the science you command
and the unique soul before you.
Walk that span with grace —
knowing that to cure is the rarest gift,
to treat is your daily devotion,
and to comfort, always —
your unbreakable covenant.

The Physician’s Word

There will come a moment —
and you will recognize it by the stillness in the room —
when no test or treatment matters
as much as what you say next.

The Stewardship of Medical Evidence

Guard the altar of inquiry with reason.
When denial dresses itself in certainty,
and premature conclusions crowd the evidence out,
public health suffers for every truth
bandoned to whim or anecdote.

Physician as Teacher

past the hour of the appointment. 
Send them home knowing more than when they came —
not diminished by dependence,
but empowered by understanding,
stewards of their own fragile, magnificent lives.

Charles Stern, MD, enjoyed a 36 year career in family medicine that included hospital and OB practice in the first half, ambulatory medicine, teaching medical students and residents, administrative leadership, quality and safety and primary care redesign, plus physician wellness. 

After retirement, he found his poetic voice that emerged beside his mother’s deathbed, where he felt the quiet transmission of words between two souls — an echo of her own award-winning life as a published poet. Inspired by nature, medicine, family, and our shared humanity, his writing explores the delicate threads that connect us all. Charles is also the author of a children’s book. “A Call From the Blue,” and an accomplished jazz trumpeter, performing with a big band in Woodway, Texas, where he lives.
