About TAFP Education
TAFP continuing medical education mission statement
The Texas Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP) is the medical specialty society for family physicians in Texas. Planning, developing, and presenting high-quality, unbiased, evidence-based continuing professional development in compliance with the criteria of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) is the fundamental educational goal of the organization.
TAFP-produced CME is designed and presented to facilitate change in the competency and performance of family physicians, primary care physicians, and other primary care providers.
Types of activities provided
Utilizing effective, commercially unbiased content based on the principles of adult learning, TAFP CME activities are planned and implemented through the following educational interventions:
- Live activities and interactive workshops featuring didactic lectures, case studies, and dedicated time for questions and answers;
- Live procedural activities featuring didactic lectures, demonstration, case studies, and hands-on procedural skills;
- Enduring materials online; and
- Collaborations with other accredited and non-accredited providers.
The content of each TAFP activity is selected based on practice gaps and unmet educational needs identified through a planning committee, the bi-annual educational needs assessment survey of TAFP members, evaluation results from past activities, special member needs, and literature and journal searches. TAFP strives to enhance the value of its CME by incorporating content that is evidence-based in its activities.
TAFP CME activities are planned with the expected results of changing physician performance improving patient care. To measure the achievement of these results, TAFP asks participants to evaluate the activity, report actions that will be implemented as a result of the activity, identify barriers to change, and report changes made in practice based upon the implementation. To measure expected results, TAFP provides interactive participation opportunities during the activity, a post-activity evaluation, and a long-term assessment of changes made as a result of the activity.

Texas Academy of Family Physicians Commission on Continuing Professional Development
TAFP’s education provides primary care physicians and other health care professionals the opportunity to update their medical knowledge of important advances in the medical field, address their unmet educational needs, enhance their clinical skills and support professional development through a multi-faceted curriculum. Through plenary sessions, case-study discussions, and audience interaction, TAFP activities strive to develop and promote CME with the ultimate goal of enhancing patient care.
TAFP was first granted accreditation by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education in 1997 and has maintained accreditation ever since, most recently receiving reaccreditation in 2021. To maintain accreditation, our programs must adhere to strict guidelines. The educational programming offered since the initial accreditation in 1996 has included annual symposia, regional seminars, online activities, and enduring materials. TAFP collaborates with hospitals, state chapters, medical education companies, risk management providers, other associations, and other accredited organizations. TAFP offers AMA PRA Category 1 credit™ and AAFP Prescribed credit for every symposium.
