Member of the Month: Tony Roshan, DO
New physician volunteers as preceptor to share the value of family medicine
By Samantha White

Tony Roshan, DO, grew up near the Texas Medical Center in Houston, which he credits with his initial interest in practicing medicine. From early on he had an interest in making health care more accessible, so he began his educational journey with a degree in biomedical engineering from the University of Houston. Despite working as an engineer and research for a couple of years, he knew his calling was medicine. While earning his medical degree from the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine he fell in love with the specialty of family medicine. After completing his family medicine residency at the UTHealth McGovern Medical School Family Medicine Residency Program, he joined McGovern as faculty, where he currently practices in the clinic while also attending on the family medicine inpatient service at Memorial Hermann Hospital.
Who or what inspired you to become a family physician?
I was inspired to pursue family medicine because of its breadth of knowledge and the opportunity for lifelong learning. I believe this scope allows me to better serve my community and future communities. I firmly believe family medicine is one of the best fields for making health care accessible to people of all ages and backgrounds.
What do you remember from your time as a student in the preceptorship program that you still carry with you?
I served as a TAFP Member Assembly Delegate in 2020 – 2021 and vividly remember the camaraderie among members in promoting family medicine to local medical schools and communities. This was during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, and witnessing the continued passion and determination to advocate for family medicine during such challenging times was incredibly inspiring.
Why do you volunteer as a preceptor?
I volunteer as a preceptor because I believe it is a meaningful way to share the value and impact of our profession with aspiring medical students. I hope that by continuing to serve in this role, I can inspire the next generation of doctors to pursue family medicine and help them see the many ways we can serve our communities.
Why do you choose to be a TAFP member?
I choose to be a TAFP member because the organization provides high-quality educational experiences and strong advocacy for our profession in Texas. It means a great deal to be part of an organization whose primary mission is advancing the health of all Texans through family medicine.
What do you enjoy doing outside of medicine?
Outside of medicine, I enjoy grilling and spending time with my family. My wife and I love exploring parks and travel destinations with our two toddlers — it’s always an adventure!
TAFP’s Member of the Month program highlights Texas family physicians in TAFP News Now and on the TAFP website. We feature a biography and a Q&A with a different TAFP member each month and his or her unique approach to family medicine. If you know an outstanding family physician colleague who you think should be featured as a Member of the Month or if you’d like to tell your own story, nominate yourself or your colleague by contacting TAFP by email at tafp@tafp.org or by phone at (512) 329-8666.
