Any community leader can sign up to be a presenter: family physicians, family medicine residents, medical students, school nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, respiratory therapists, dental hygienists, other health care professionals, health educators, parents or teachers. Each can help discourage tobacco use in Texas communities by joining the Tar Wars team and influence positive health decisions in future generations.
The benefits of volunteering to be a Tar Wars presenter:
- It’s free to participate.
- You can donate as much or as little of your time as you’d like; presenters can volunteer for one presentation or multiple.
- You can be a role model and make a difference in your community.
- It’s easy: Tar Wars has curriculum with activities designed for you to present.
Responsibilities of Being a Tar Wars Presenter
- Be committed and enthusiastic.
- Be on time. Classrooms operate on established schedules.
- Request that the class or group size be limited to a maximum of 30 students. Tar Wars is not designed to be conducted in an “assembly-style” setting.
- Support a tobacco-free lifestyle and environment.
- Use your creativity and individuality to present Tar Wars.
- Contact your state coordinator, Juleah Williams, for details on the state poster contest – when and where, deadline and mailing address for submitting posters, potential prize list.
- Encourage students to create posters reinforcing their decision to be tobacco-free. Be sure to tell both teachers and students about poster contest criteria, state and national poster contest prizes, and important deadlines.
- Submit the Presentation Questionnaire for Presenters online.
- Have fun!
For more information on being a presenter check out the resources page on the national Tar Wars site.
