Travel funding

The TAFP Foundation provides travel funding for family medicine residents and medical students interested in family medicine to attend Academy meetings. For information, contact Juleah Williams at jwilliams@tafp.org or by phone at (512) 329-8666 ext. 35

Weldon G. Kolb, M.D., Medical Student Scholarship

Established by the TAFP Foundation in honor of Dr. Kolb. Dr. Kolb was a charter member and past TAFP President from La Marque, Texas. Contact the Department of Family Medicine at UTMB for more information.
Eligibility requirement: 3rd year medical student at UTMB Galveston

Arnold N. Krause, M.D., Medical Student Scholarship

Established by the Tarrant County Chapter Scholarship in 1999, the scholarship was named after long-time leader and mentor, Arnold N. Krause, M.D., after his death in 2005. The scholarship benefits third and fourth year medical or osteopathic students who are legal residents of Tarrant County, Texas.
Eligibility requirement: Texas medical student who are in their third or fourth year with a connection to Tarrant County

Minnie Lee Lancaster, M.D. and Edgar Lancaster, M.D., Medical Student Scholarship

Established by the TAFP Foundation with donations from their colleagues and friends. They opened the first clinic in Grapevine, TX and help build the Grapevine Memorial Hospital and Clinic.
Eligibility requirement: medical student at UT Southwestern

Norma Porres, M.D., and Felipe Porres, M.D., Medical Student Scholarship

Established by the South Plains Chapter of TAFP in honor of both Drs. Porres. Exiled from Cuba, these family physicians settled in Lubbock and were very active in continuing medical education. Dr. Norma Porres was a past South Plains Chapter president.
Eligibility requirement: 3rd year medical student at Texas Tech University

S. Perry Post, M.D., Medical Student Scholarship

Established by the Alamo Chapter of TAFP in honor of Dr. Post. Dr. Post was the last TAFP charter member and was a past Family Physician of the Year.
Eligibility: 3rd year medical students at UTHSC – San Antonio.

Harold T. Pruessner, M.D., Medical Student Scholarship

Established by the Harris County Chapter of TAFP in honor of Dr. Pruessner. Dr. Pruessner was Chair of the Department of Family Practice and helped create the residency program at UT Houston. Contact the Harris County Chapter of TAFP for more information.
Eligibility requirement: 3rd year medical student at UT Houston or Baylor College of Medicine

William F. Ross, M.D., Medical Student Scholarship

Established by the Dallas Chapter of TAFP in honor of Dr. Ross. Dr. Ross practiced many years in the San Benito, Texas before becoming the first Family Practice Chair of UTSW in Dallas.
Eligibility: medical student at UT Southwestern.

South Texas Chapter Medical Student Scholarship

Established by the South Texas Chapter benefiting medical students who have an interest in family medicine. Known for its successful annual seminar in Port Aransas, the South Texas Chapter established the scholarship with proceeds from this CME event.
Eligibility requirement: Texas medical student who are in their third or fourth year with a connection to Calhoun, Jackson, Victoria, Lavaca, Goliad, Gonzales, or DeWitt county

Valley Chapter Medical Student Scholarship

Established by the Valley Chapter of TAFP to benefit medical students in the Lower Rio Grande Valley area. The scholarship was funded by proceeds from the Valley Chapters successful annual family practice seminar.
Eligibility: Texas Medical Student who are in their third or fourth year with a connection to the lower Rio Grande Valley.

Cecil M. French, M.D., Scholarship

Established by the TAFP Foundation in honor of Dr. French from San Angelo, Texas. Dr. French was past president of TAFP and a founding member of the TAFP Foundation.
Award details: Resident chair receives travel funding for TAFP’s Interim and Annual Sessions.

Richard B. Hartin, M.D., Scholarship

Established by the TAFP Foundation in honor of Dr. Hartin. Dr. Hartin was a longtime member of the Dallas Chapter.
Award details: Resident vice chair receives travel funding for TAFP’s Interim and Annual Sessions.

Leah Raye Mabry, M.D., Scholarship

Established by the TAFP Foundation and the Alamo Chapter to honor Dr. Mabry. Dr. Mabry is past president of the TAFP and currently serves as Vice Speaker at the AAFP level.
Award details: Female resident receives travel funding for AAFP’s National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Students or other leadership conference

Sam A. Nixon, M.D., Scholarship

Established by the TAFP Foundation to honor Dr. Nixon. Dr. Nixon was past president of TAFP, AAFP and the TAFP Foundation. The leadership scholarship was established after his service as Foundation President in 2001.
Award details: Resident delegate and alternate delegate travel to the AAFP National Conference of Family Medicine Residents and Students

Philip Thorek, M.D., Scholarship

Established by the TAFP Foundation in honor of Dr. Thorek. Dr. Thorek was the keynote speaker at the first TAFP Annual Session. He continued to present the keynote lecture at TAFP Annual Sessions until his death and was loved, admired and respected by the members of the Texas Academy of Family Physicians.
Award details: Resident directors to the TAFP Board of Directors receive travel funding for TAFP’s Annual Session

James C. Martin, M.D., Scholarship

Established by the TAFP Foundation in honor of James C. Martin, M.D. Dr. Martin has been an active leader in TAFP and AAFP for many years. He is past president of the American Academy of Family Physicians.
Award details: This scholarship is to be used to fund a resident leader to work at the Robert Graham Center in Washington, DC.

Jim and Karen White Leadership Scholarship

Established by the TAFP Foundation in 2007 to honor longtime Executive Director, Jim White and his wife Karen. Jim was Executive Director from 1982 to 2007.
Award details: Medical Students and Residents can apply to attend for travel funding to attend a leadership-training event. Total annual grant is not to exceed $1250.

Henry J. Boehm, M.D., Scholarship

The TAFP Foundation established this scholarship to honor Dr. Boehm of Brenham. Dr. Boehm is a long time member of the TAFP Foundation Board of Trustees and the TAFP Board of Directors.

Glen Johnson, M.D., Scholarship

The TAFP Foundation established this scholarship with a donation from the Wellcare Foundation to honor Dr. Johnson. Dr. Johnson is a TAFP past president and past AAFP leader.

Edwin L. Mueller, M.D., Scholarship

The Alamo Chapter of TAFP established this scholarship in honor of Dr. Mueller. Dr. Mueller is a life member of TAFP.
