AAFP calls on members to Speak Out against looming Medicare cut

The U.S. Senate will soon vote on a bill that would block a 10.6-percent cut in physician payments through Medicare scheduled to go into effect July 1. The bill by Sen. Max Baucus, D-Mont., which will likely be introduced during the week of June 9, would provide a small increase to physician payments through 2009.

The American Association of Retired Persons, or AARP, opposes the bill because it doesn’t contain guarantees against Medicare premium increases. The powerful lobby organization has launched a multimillion-dollar campaign to defeat the legislation.

AAFP issued an action alert to members asking that they contact their senators to voice support for the bill. You can use the Academy’s Web-based advocacy tool, Speak Out, to contact your U.S. senators. There you’ll find a set of talking points and an editable message to send.
