TAFP defines the “medical home” concept in third Academy in Action video
posted 01.10.08
TAFP has released the third Webcast in the Academy in Action series, “The Patient-centered Medical Home” to draw attention to the value of family medicine and family physicians’ role in providing patients a medical home.
“The patient-centered medical home gives patients a personal primary care physician who leads a team of individuals dedicated to providing comprehensive and continuous care,” reports TAFP Director of Communications Jonathan Nelson in the video. Through these methods, physicians can provide “safe, high-quality care” that features enhanced access for patients and fair reimbursement for physicians.
Lawmakers on a state and federal level are listening to groups like AAFP and TAFP for ways to save money in a complex health system and provide Americans better care, says TAFP member and AAFP Director Roland Goertz, M.D., of Waco. Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill., who serves as chair of the Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government, is one legislator considering the benefits of a medical home for each American.
“When you consider the growing cost of medical care across America, there are certain common-sense approaches that we should be turning to,” Durbin says in the video. “Medical homes would be one of those to make sure primary care physicians can be in direct touch with families on a regular basis to provide them the best and most economical health care.”
