Public health

TAFP created the TAFP Public Health award in 2004 modeled after the AAFP Public Health Award to honor work in Texas. Past winners are:

2004 — Eduardo Sanchez, MD, Austin (won AAFP’s 2005 Public Health Award)
2005 — Olga Duchicela, MD, Weimar
2006 — Thomas Gavagan, MD, Houston
2007 — Janet Realini, MD, San Antonio (won AAFP’s 2008 Public Health Award)
2008 — Juan Campos, MD, MBA, MPH, McAllen
2009 — Tamra K. Deuser, MD, Flower Mound (won AAFP’s 2010 Public Health Award)
2010 — James A. Mobley, MD, Portland
2011 — Philip Huang, MD, MPH, Austin

Nominees may be physicians working in public health or going beyond their patient community to have an impact on public health, or non-physicians who have an extraordinary impact on the public health of America (city, county, state, or nation). Nominations must come from a TAFP member.

Nomination Requirements

  • Completed nomination form,
  • Typed copy of a current curriculum vitae,
  • A written narrative describing the nominee’s public health activity and impact, and
  • Letter of recommendation from the nominator.

The Commission on Public Health will judge submissions.

Awards will be presented at the TAFP Annual Session in Austin, Texas, July 14, 2012.
