TAFP
Foundation
Scholarships
must
raise
$25,000
before
they
are
considered
fully
funded
and
can
begin
awarding
scholarships.
The
following
scholarships
are
still
in
the
fundraising
stage:

The
TAFP
Foundation
is
pleased
to
announce
the
creation
of
the
TAFP
Minority
Medical
Student
Scholarship.
This
scholarship
is
soliciting
donations
that
will
be
matched
by
the
TAFP
Foundation
from
their
general
funds
until
the
scholarship
is
fully
funded
($25,000).
Once
funded,
this
scholarship
will
benefit
underrepresented
minorities
who
are
interested
in
family
medicine,
excel
academically
and
are
in
their
third
year
of
medical
school
in
Texas.
-
The Edwin L. Mueller, MD
Scholarship, established by the Alamo Chapter of TAFP,
will
be awarded to a third year
medical student in the San Antonio area who meets certain criteria and plans a career in
Family
Medicine.
-
The
Henry
J.
Boehm,
Jr.,
MD,
scholarship
will
benefit
residents
at
the
Brazos
Valley
Family
Medicine
Residency
program
in
Bryan.
The
scholarship
honors
the
career
of
Henry
J.
Boehm,
Jr.,
MD,
of
Brenham,
Texas.

The
following
fully
funded
scholarships
are
awarded
annually.
- The
Weldon G. Kolb,
MD,
Medical
Student
Scholarship
Fund
was
established in
1992
to
honor
the
TAFP
Past
President.
Weldon G. Kolb, MD, pursued a career of tireless
service in medicine and local community leadership. He served as Chief of Staff at
Mainland Center Hospital, where in 1992, the Weldon G. Kolb, MD Pavilion was dedicated in
his honor. Other credits to Dr. Kolb include: Texas Family Physician of the Year; Charter
Member & President, TAFP; President and Chairman, TAFP Foundation; Outstanding Citizen
of LaMarque; Life Member, LaMarque PTA; Charter Member, LaMarque Masonic Lodge; Charter
Member, LaMarque Rotary Club.
The
scholarship
is awarded
annually
to an outstanding third year medical student at UTMB
Galveston who meets certain criteria and plans to specialize in Family
Medicine.
The life
of Dr. Kolb, who died in 1995, was marked by giving. You may wish to continue that legacy
by contributing to the Weldon G. Kolb, MD Medical Student Scholarship Fund.
- The
S. Perry Post, MD,
Medical
Student
Scholarship
Fund
was
established
to
honor
the
TAFP
charter
member
and
leader,
S.
Perry
Post,
MD.
Dr.
Post
served the needs of patients in his private practice in San Antonio and provided
leadership in the medical community for over 40 years. Dr. Post served as President,
Vice-President, and Secretary of the Bexar County Medical Society; Professor in the Family
Practice Department at UTHSC-San Antonio; Chief of Staff, Methodist Hospital. He is also a
Charter Member of local, state and national chapters of the American Academy of Family
Physicians and
was involved with the Texas Medical Association.
The S. Perry Post, MD Medical Student
Scholarship is awarded to a third year medical student at UTHSC-San Antonio who meets
certain criteria and plans a career in Family
Medicine. Please join us in tribute to the
remarkable accomplishments and service of Dr. Post by contributing to the S. Perry Post,
MD Medical Student Scholarship Fund.
- The career of William F. Ross,
MD reflects dedication to serving the medical needs of patients and
providing leadership and guidance to his colleagues in the medical community. After
graduating from UT Southwestern Medical School, Dr. Ross practiced family medicine in
South Texas for 22 years and then returned to UT Southwestern to chair the Family Practice
Department for 16 years. Dr. Ross served as President of TMA; Alternate Delegate to the
American Medical Association and Vice-President of the American Board of Family Practice.
He also served on the Governors Task Force on Indigent Health Care and the
Lieutenant Governors Select Committee on Medicaid and Family Services.
The William F. Ross, MD Medical Student
Scholarship is awarded annually to a promising medical student at UT Southwestern Medical
School who meets certain criteria and is planning a career in Family Practice. Friends and
colleagues are invited to remember and honor Dr. Ross, who died in 1994, via a donation to
the William F. Ross, MD Medical Student Scholarship Fund.
- The medical careers of Norma
Porres, MD and Felipe Porres, MD exemplify what many physicians set as their
goals- to serve the needs of a community and make a difference. As family physicians, Drs.
Felipe and Norma Porres have done this by diligently serving the health care needs of
Lubbock and surrounding areas. Dr. Norma Porres dedication resulted in her being
named 1993 TAFP "Physician of the Year." She was also co-founder and president
of Planned Parenthood of Lubbock; a member of the Lubbock Council of Head Start; Associate
Professor in the Department of Family Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences
Center; and served extensively in the South Plains chapter of TAFP.
Both
Felipe and Norma were awarded Citizens of the
Year in Lubbock in 1973.
The Porres Scholarship is presented
annually to a TTUHSC Lubbock campus third year medical student upon the recommendation of
the Department of Family Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center. The
recipient is a student who exemplifies the attitudes and skills consistent with the
principles of Family
Medicine.
In honor of two
physicians who have given so much to Lubbock and the entire state of Texas, we welcome you
to continue their legacy of service and dedication by contributing to the Norma Porres, MD
and Felipe Porres, MD Medical Student Scholarship Fund.
- The Harold T. Pruessner, MD
Medical Student Scholarship was established in 1995 to honor this dedicated family
physician educator in Harris County.
Following a distinguished career in the
United States Navy and a 20 year venture in private practice in Corpus Christi, Dr.
Pruessner embarked upon his true calling as an educator. Dr. Pruessner was the first
full-time family physician recruited to join the faculty of the new University of Texas
Medical School at Houston. In the 20 years following, he served the medical school and the
Houston community in many capacities including Chair of the Department of Family Practice
and Community Medicine and as President of the Harris County Chapter of the TAFP. Dr.
Pruessner was awarded the Outstanding Clinical Teaching Department Award at the
UTHSC-Houston. Additionally, the Harold T. Pruessner, MD Teaching Award was established in
1980 and is presented annually to an outstanding senior Family Practice resident.
Recipients of the Harold T. Pruessner, MD
Medical Student Scholarship are third year medical students at either Baylor College of
Medicine or the University of Texas Medical School at Houston who intend to enter Family
Medicine
and meet certain criteria. Please join the Harris County Chapter of the TAFP in
this plan to help defray the costs of education for future family doctors.
- The Valley Chapter Scholarship
Fund is a recent addition to the TAFP Foundation Scholarship fund. It is
geared to draw additional students and physicians to the Valley area. The Valley Chapter
granted the TAFP Foundation funds to award medical students in the valley area
scholarships.

South
Texas
Chapter
Medical
Student
Scholarship
was
established
by
the
South
Texas
Chapter
benefiting
medical
students
who
have
an
interest
in
family
medicine.
Scholarships
are
given
to
students
who
meet
the
criteria
which
includes
being
a
current
or
previous
resident
of
the
following
counties:
Calhoun,
Jackson,
Victoria,
Goliad,
Lavaca,
Gonzales,
and
DeWitt.
-
The
Arnold
N.
Krause,
MD,
Medical
Student
Scholarship
was
established
by
the
TAFP
Tarrant
County
Chapter
for
the
benefit
of
third
year
medical
or
osteopathic
students
who
are
current
or
previous
residents
of
Tarrant
County.
It
was
established
in
1999
and
was
re-named
after
long
time
leader
and
mentor,
Arnold
N.
Krause,
MD,
after
his
death
in
2005.
-
The TAFP Foundation is pleased to announce the creation of
the
Minnie Lee Lancaster, M.D.,
and
Edgar
Lancaster,
MD,
Medical Student Scholarship.
This scholarship was started with a generous donation from the
Baylor Medical Center at Grapevine.
It will
benefit medical students at the University of Texas Southwestern
Medical Center at Dallas.
Drs.
Lancaster opened the first clinic in
Grapevine
in 1953.
