What
is
the
family
of
family
medicine
in
Texas?
COLLEAGUES
–
I
enjoyed
hearing
from
you
last
month
after
my
first
e-mail
to
the
membership.
Remember,
you
can
send
your
thoughts
and
concerns
to
me
at
president@tafp.org.
In
our
busy
practices,
we
sometimes
forget
there
is
a
family
of
three
organizations
that
are
all
advocates
for
our
specialty
in
Texas.
The
family
of
family
medicine
in
Texas
includes
our
Texas
Academy
of
Family
Physicians,
the
TAFP
Foundation,
and
the
TAFP
Political
Action
Committee
(TAFPPAC).

Each
of
these
organizations
focuses
on
the
needs
of
our
specialty
and
the
patients
we
serve.
They
are
interrelated
and
chartered
for
specific
reasons.
The
TAFP
is
a
tax
exempt
organization
501(c)(6)
under
the
IRS
Code.
This
means
TAFP
is
a
professional
member
organization
whose
primary
purpose
is
to
provide
education,
research
and
advocacy
to
promote
better
care
for
our
patients.
It
cannot
contribute
to
political
campaigns.
The
TAFP
Foundation
is
also
a
tax
exempt
organization
and
is
a
501(c)(3)
under
the
IRS
Code.
This
means
that
when
we
give
a
gift
to
the
Foundation,
it
is
tax
deductible.
Member
gifts
have
built
the
Foundation's
assets
to
over
one
million
dollars.
Most
of
the
funds
are
for
specific
scholarships
to
encourage
bright
young
men
and
women
to
pursue
a
career
in
family
medicine.
The
Foundation
cannot
contribute
to
political
campaigns.
We
can
make
our
tax
deductible
donations
to
the
TAFP
Foundation
at
http://www.tafp.org/Foundation.htm.
The
TAFP
Political
Action
Committee
can
contribute
to
political
campaigns.
Donations
to
the
TAFPPAC
are
used
to
support
candidates
that
have
been
vetted
and
are
known
to
support
family
medicine.
Contributing
to
campaigns
allows
Family
Medicine
to
sit
at
the
table
when
decisions
that
affect
medicine
and
Family
Medicine
are
made.
We
can
contribute
to
the
TAFPPAC
on
their
Web
site
at
http://www.tafppac.org.
Until
I
became
actively
involved
in
the
leadership
of
the
Academy,
I
did
not
realize
the
amount
of
resources
that
were
in
play
on
my
behalf.
In
my
upcoming
messages
to
you,
I
will
share
some
of
my
experiences
to
hopefully
help
you
better
understand
our
organizations
and
how
they
are
working
for
us.
Sincerely,
Tim
Coleridge,
D.O.
