TAFP’s Continuing Medical Education Mission Statement
Purpose
The Texas Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP) is the medical specialty society for family physicians in Texas. Planning, developing, and presenting high-quality, unbiased, evidence-based continuing medical education (CME) in compliance with the criteria of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) is the fundamental educational goal of the organization.
Target Audience
TAFP-produced CME is designed and presented to facilitate change in the knowledge, competency, and performance of family physicians, primary care physicians, and other primary care providers.
Types of Activities Provided
Utilizing effective, commercially unbiased content based on the principles of adult learning, TAFP CME activities are planned and implemented through the following educational interventions:
- Live activities and interactive workshops featuring didactic lectures, case studies, and dedicated time for questions and answers;
- Enduring materials online and in print; and
- Collaborations with other accredited and non-accredited providers.
Content
The content of each TAFP activity is selected based on practice gaps and unmet educational needs identified through a planning committee comprising past and current members of the TAFP Commission on Annual Session & CME, the bi-annual educational needs-assessment survey of TAFP members, evaluation results from each activity, special member needs, and literature and journal searches. TAFP strives to enhance the value of its CME by incorporating content that is evidence-based in its activities.
Expected Results
TAFP CME activities are planned with the expected results of enhancing physician knowledge, changing physician performance, and ultimately improving patient care. To measure the achievement of these results, TAFP asks participants to assess the activity, provide new knowledge gained during the activity, evaluate the implementation of the new knowledge into their practice, and document the change in patient care based upon the implementation. To measure expected results, TAFP provides interactive participation opportunities during the activity, a post-activity evaluation, and a long-term assessment of behavioral changes made as a result of the activity.
