Martin, M.D., takes office as AAFP President

James
C. Martin, M.D., a family physician in San Antonio, Texas, was
sworn in as president of the American Academy of Family
Physicians at the AAFP Congress of Delegates. The Congress of
Delegates, the AAFP’s governing body, chose Martin as
president-elect during the organization’s annual meeting in
October 2001. Previously, he served three years as a member of
the Academy’s board of directors. read

Braunfels FP appointed to National Violence Committee
Beverly
Burnett Nuckols, M.D., TAFP member from New Braunfels, was
appointed to the National Advisory Committee on Violence Against
Women. The committee is co-chaired by Attorney General John
Ashcroft and Department of Health and Human Services Secretary
Tommy Thompson. read

Leadership Conference held in San Antonio
This
past November, TAFP leaders from across the state gathered in
San Antonio for the TAFP Leadership and Legislative Conference.
As in the past, Schering provided a grant through the AAFP
Foundation to support this program. The conference, held Nov.
8-10 at the Hyatt Hill Country Resort, is aimed at preparing
members to be family practice advocates. read

honored at the Nov. 21 meeting of the Texas Board of Public
Health for completing a year-long fellowship in preventive
medicine and general public health with the Texas Department of
Health. read

Jack
Weinblatt, M.D., of Temple was honored with four awards Dec. 5 at
the William R. Courtney Texas State Veterans Home. Weinblatt
received a certificate of appreciation signed by Texas Lieutenant
Governor David Dewhurst in recognition of his service to veterans.

Raye Mabry, M.D., Texas Delegate to the AAFP Congress of
Delegates and past TAFP President, was appointed to a four-year
position on the AAFP Commission on Finance and Insurance. Mabry
previously served as member and chair of the AAFP Commission on
Public Health. Kaparaboyna Ashok Kumar, M.D. was appointed to a
four-year position on the AAFP Committee on Special
