Are you ready for summer? What if your summer included a few days in Venice? And, what if those few Venetian days were yours for just $125? Now we’re talking! Actually, we’re talking about TAFP’s 55th Annual Session and Scientific Assembly taking place July 15-18, 2004 in our Texas-style Venetian escape, The Woodlands Waterway Marriott Hotel and Convention Center.

The Woodlands is just a few minutes north of Houston, but miles away from the hustle and bustle of city life. As you exit I-45, you’ll realize quickly you are not on the Interstate anymore. The name says it all — the 25,000-acre master-planned community was virtually dropped in a forest of pine trees. Hotels, shopping malls, restaurants, and the famous Cynthia Woods Mitchell pavilion all take second stage to the magnificent trees lining the streets. Wind your way through the woods and you’ll find our Italian home — for a few days, that is!

The 55th Annual Session and Scientific Assembly has been planned with you, the busy family physician in mind. We know you need quality CME hours, you want to discuss the future of family medicine and your family wants to have fun activities while you listen to experts from around the country as they help you enhance the care you give your patients.

The program’s planning committee and TAFP staff have put the latest topics from the hottest speakers on this year’s schedule. We’ll start the general session with family physician and TAFP favorite Louis Kuritzky, M.D., presenting, “Five Things I Wish I Knew Last Year,” a review of hidden pearls from the previous year’s research. The program’s 31 hours will include hot topics like whether or not to give hormones, safety issues in patients with dementia, how to protect your assets in case of a malpractice suit, the options available for a non-insurance-based practice, and finding the right weight- loss plan for your patients. Sunday’s program will conclude with a state-of-the-specialty address from AAFP President Michael Fleming, MD.

While at Annual Session, get involved by participating in business meetings or socializing in the many networking opportunities available. The future of family medicine is being shaped by the work of many of TAFP’s family physicians. To get involved, join us Thursday, July 15 at one of many committee and commission meetings. In addition, we are once again including member favorites like Friday’s Physician of the Year Reception, Happy Hour Networking on Saturday, and the annual President’s Party. This year’s party features an evening of wine, dinner and special entertainment that will leave you laughing all the way back to your room!

Plus, be sure to take advantage of one-on-one time with 100 exhibitors in the Town Center Exhibit Hall. Learn about the newest products and service available during Thursday evening’s opening celebration. Enjoy great Italian food and an authentic Italian strolling trio of musicians!

With it’s diverse shopping, award winning golf and cool water, your family will love The Woodlands. The shopping options are endless. The Woodlands Town Center, less than a mile away from the hotel and opening this spring, features an open-air center with 368,000 square feet of upscale retail and restaurant space. Shopping also awaits at The Woodlands Mall. Flanked by Foleys and Dillard’s, this two-story mall has everything you need. Don’t forget to ride the carousel while at the food court. If antiques and arts and crafts are more your style, take the short drive to Old Town Spring where you will find more than 180 specialty shops, two wineries, three museums and 15 restaurants and tea rooms.

If you’d rather spend your free time outdoors, The Woodlands can meet your needs. Less than a mile from the hotel is The Woodlands TPC, a Tournament Players Club course. Or, try playing Tour 18 Houston, located 20 miles away in Humble. Tour 18 includes replications of 18 of America’s greatest holes including Hilton Head and Augusta. Just north of The Woodlands is beautiful Lake Conroe and with the availability of ski boat, wave runner and pontoon boat rentals, the fun is endless. Why not grab the whole family and enjoy the Zoom Flume and Treehouse Island at nearby Splashtown. Families are invited to a special breakfast on Friday morning to learn more about the recreational options in the area and sign up for great prizes.

The Annual Session planning committee and the TAFP staff hope you will join us this July for the 55th Annual Session and Scientific Assembly. We think you’ll find that a little bit of Italy is just what the doctor ordered. For detailed program and hotel information, log on to www.tafp.org .
